POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE REPORTED NEAR CRETE

On 1 July 2009 a strong struck off the coast of Crete at approximately 1230 local time. The magnitude of the earthquake was initially reported as 6.7 but was later downgraded to 6.4. The undersea quake occurred at a depth of approximately 24 mi/38 km, and was centered 75 mi/125 km south of Iraklion. An aftershock with a magnitude of 4.9 was recorded at 1259 local time. The second quake occurred at a depth of approximately 17 mi/27 km, and was centered 90 mi/145 km south-southeast of Iraklion. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
