Ongoing Greek customs strike begins to show results

24 Sep 2008
An ongoing Greek customs strike over plans to discontinue a bonus payment began to show results on 24 September 2008. The action, which has limited the entry of cargo trucks along Greece's northern borders, has caused fuel shortages in larger cities and fears of shortages of fresh foods and other items at grocery stores. Approximately 30 percent of gas stations have reportedly closed after running out of fuel. Greece's customs officers launched rolling 48-hour strikes on 22 September. Separately, a strike by tram drivers over pay is expected on 25 September. The action will take place from 1200 to 1600 local time, but disruptions to schedules are possible from 1030 to 1715 local time.
