Metro strike in Athens

A Metro strike is scheduled to take place in Athens on 16 June 2010. The 24-hour action is being organized over the non-renewal of contracts for approximately 285 workers whom a report found to have been hired illegally. Two of the country's main unions -- the Greek General Confederation of Labor and the Public Employees Federation -- will also stage a demonstration in Athens on the same day over the government's economic policies. Meanwhile, a regional public transport strike is also being planned on 17 June over wage cuts and social security system changes. The strike -- which will affect the region of Attica, where Athens is located -- will last from 1100 to 1600 local time. A march to the Ministry of Labor will be staged in relation to the work stoppage in Athens. Travelers to the city should expect some disruptions
