Fuel shortages throughout Greece
27 Jul 2010
Fuel shortages are occurring across Greece on 27 July 2010 due to an open-ended strike being staged by truck drivers to protest proposed reforms to liberalize the transport sector. The strike has left many gasoline stations without fuel, including 95 percent of stations in the Athens area and 75 percent in Thessaloniki. Long lines have formed at stations with supplies of fuel; there is a potential that the strike could continue for several more days.
Meanwhile, air traffic controllers suspended a work-to-rule protest on 27 July to resume negotiations with the government over their grievances. The protest action has delayed hundreds of flights since it began on 25 July; air traffic has since returned to normal.
