Farmers protest continues

22 Jan 2009
Protesting farmers continued blocking roads and border checkpoints in Greece for the fourth consecutive day on 22 January 2009. Two border crossings and the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway remain blocked in several places. In addition, the Hania-Irakleio highway in Crete was also blocked. Reports indicate that truck drivers who were stalled at the blocked Greek-Bulgarian border engaged in isolated clashes with the farmers, but no injuries were reported. At one point overnight, farmers reportedly attempted to cross into Bulgarian territory near the Kulata Border Crossing Point, but Bulgarian border police stopped them. Unions representing the farmers are expected to meet on 22 January to determine what further actions will be taken. The border blockade is expected to last until at least 24 January.
