24-Hour Strike Halts Public Services
11 Mar 2010
A 24-hour general strike halted public and transport services across Greece on 11 March 2010. The strike was organised by the private sector union GSEE and the public sector union ADEDY in protest of austerity measures initiated by the government. As a result, the country’s airspace has been closed, schools and hospitals did not open and buses and trams were out of service in Athens and Thessaloniki for 24 hours. The unions have also announced another general strike for 16 March.
