Tensions increase after run-off elections

30 Dec 2008
Tensions have increased in Ghana in the wake of a presidential run-off election. Supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) gathered at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Accra overnight on 29-30 December 2008, calling for the election results to be released. Security officials -- who had cordoned off the offices -- used tear gas on the crowd; however, the situation is reportedly calm. The race between the two candidates remains close.
