rail line attacked

02 Jun 2009
An explosion today damaged 20 ft of the Tbilisi-Zugdidi rail line near the village of Ingiri, which is approximately 185 miles northwest of Tbilisi. Local rail officials suggested the blast was a terrorist attack, claiming that explosives and a timing device were used. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred two hours before a passenger train was scheduled to use the route. Traffic has since been restored on the rail line, which is used by both passenger and cargo trains and is one of the primary routes in Georgia. The area of attack is located near the separatist region of Abkhazia; there has been no claim of responsibility so far.
