07 Aug 2008
Fighting broke out along the border of the separatist region of South Ossetia on the night of 6 August 2008 and resumed on 7 August. Georgian and separatist forces are reportedly exchanging gunfire and shelling each other near Tskhinvali, the capital of the breakaway region, and nearby villages. An unconfirmed number of injuries on both sides have been reported. South Ossetia has accused Georgia of preparing for a military conflict, while Georgia has accused South Ossetia of attempting to pull Georgia into such a conflict. Tensions between the two have been high of late, and it is not known if they will be willing to participate in upcoming talks as planned
