70 armed militants moved into the Georgian village of Perevi

11 Nov 2008
The Georgian government announced on 10 November 2008 that at least 70 armed militants from the breakaway South Ossetia region have moved into the Georgian village of Perevi. South Ossetian separatist leader Eduard Kokoity told the Russian Interfax news agency that Perevi is part of the breakaway region. Representatives of the European Union mission in Georgia warned that the deployment could again aggravate tensions between Georgia and Russia. The militants have not opened fire or launched any attacks although some residents in Perevi have fled the town. The Georgian troops had recently withdrawn from Perevi citing concerns that a military presence there could provoke further conflict. In a separate incident on 10 November, two Georgian police officers were killed and three others injured when a landmine exploded near the village of Dvani. The officers were reportedly trying to remove a South Ossetian flag when the landmine detonated. South Ossetia representatives have denied that the breakaway region was responsible for the incident.
