General strike comes to an end

17 Jun 2010
On 16 June 2010 the general strike orchestrated by public service employees in French Polynesia ended. The trade unions agreed to end the strike after a round of late night talks with government officials over wages and pensions. According to the deal, President Gaston Tong Sang will ask the United Nation’s International Labor Organization to look into setting up an unemployment fund for the island. The strike had effectively shut down public services across French Polynesia and severely disrupted air travel to and from the territory, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Air Tahiti Nui, French Polynesia's main carrier, has already resumed flights and is prioritizing those passengers who have been waiting the longest.
