Fishermen block port of Calais

15 Apr 2009
On 15 April 2009 fishermen used their vessels to blockade ports in northwestern France in a second straight day of protests over fishing quotas. The action prompted the cancellation of ferry services between the French city of Calais and Dover in the United Kingdom, as well as services between Dunkirk and Boulogne-sur-Mer. Passenger and freight traffic are experiencing disruptions as a result of the blockades. The fishermen have threatened to continue the protests indefinitely unless the European Union lifts annual quotas.
