Aircraft debris confirmed as belonging to Air France flight
03 Jun 2009
French officials confirmed that debris spotted off the northeastern coast of Brazil belongs to Air France Flight 447, which disappeared en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport. Brazilian officials confirmed the crash of the aircraft on 2 June after military aircraft spotted metallic objects, a fuel slick and passenger seats in the Atlantic. The Brazilian air force and navy are currently conducting search and recovery efforts, and France has contributed naval vessels, a submarine and a specialised aerial radar to aid in the search. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the incident, and stated that the recovery of the aircraft's black boxes may prove difficult or impossible due to the depth of the water and the extent of the debris area.
Although authorities have not indicated whether there is any evidence of foul play in the aircraft's crash, on 27 May Argentine aviation authorities reportedly delayed another Air France flight after receiving a bomb threat. Police officers searched the aircraft for explosives for approximately 90 minutes, but later allowed the flight to proceed from Buenos Aires' Ezeiza International Airport to Paris.
