TROPICAL CYCLONE PASSES OVER FIJI ISLAND

Tropical Cyclone Mick is passing over Fiji’s Viti Levu island on 14 December 2009. As of 0300 GMT on 14 December, the storm was located 23 mi/37 km northeast of Nadi and was moving south-southeast; the storm has since begun to move away from the island. Mick has intensified, with current maximum sustained wind speeds at 57 mph/50 kt. Flash floods have been reported in Nabouwalu and Taveuni, as well as other northern areas. Roads in the area have been closed. In addition, the cyclone has destroyed some houses and plantations, although the extent of the damage has not been fully determined. Vatulele, Beqa, Kadavu, Moala and nearby smaller islands continue to be under a tropical cyclone storm warning. Pacific Sun has canceled its flights on 14 December. Inbound flights on other airlines have also been impacted.
