A tropical cyclone is currently on a path to hit Fiji on 14 March 2010. As of 0300 GMT on 12 March, Tropical Cyclone Tomas was located 558 mi/898 km west-northwest of Pago Pago, with maximum sustained winds of 40-46 mph/35-40 kt. The storm is expected to strengthen somewhat as it moves closer to Fiji, possibly reaching a Category Three Hurricane status. A Tropical Cyclone Alert has been implemented for all of Fiji’s islands. Travellers and residents should expect disruptions if the storm continues on its forecast path, including damage related to storm surge and gale force winds.
