Country could face a serious energy crisis
02 Oct 2008
On 2 October 2008 representatives of the Fiji Electricity Authority told reporters that the country could face a serious energy crisis because of a recent drought. Reports indicate that the Monasavu hydroelectric plant is at a critically low level and more rain is needed to boost the electrical output. Government officials stated that diesel generators are maintaining the required electrical output for the country. Although the generators can operate in a support role, diesel power alone cannot fully meet the country's electricity needs.
