12 suspected leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front arrested

On 6 November 2008 officials in Ethiopia announced that they have arrested at least 12 suspected leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) militant rebel group in Addis Ababa and have charged them with plotting terrorist attacks. Televised news reports showed the suspects in custody as well as a cache of seized weapons and ammunition. Authorities claim that OLF members have been planning to launch attacks against various targets as part of their insurgency against the Ethiopian government. Investigators told reporters that the suspects were stockpiling weapons, raising funds and recruiting new members to the OLF. In light of the arrests, government officials announced that police checkpoints have been set up and additional officers are on patrol to increase security in Addis Ababa.
