Opponents of mining law call for nationwide protests
08 Jan 2009
Opponents of a recently passed mining law today called for a nationwide protest to be held on 20 January 2009. They have promised marches, highway blockages and demonstrations in Quito. The group warned that the protests will continue until the legislation is overturned or until a government commission investigates their claims that the legislation is harmful to the environment and to rural interests. The administration of President Rafael Correa has stated that it will not tolerate any violence or civil unrest.
