Aircraft overshoots runway at Quito
23 Sep 2008
An Icaro Air Fokker F28 aircraft overshot the runway while attempting to take off from Mariscal Sucre International Airport (SEQU/UIO) in Quito at 1118 local time (1618 UTC) on 22 September 2008. After hitting several Instrument Landing System (ILS) antennae, the aircraft crashed through a brick wall and landed near a busy road. The aircraft, which had more than 60 passengers on board, was en route to El Coca in Orellanda province. It is not yet clear what caused the aircraft to overshoot the runway; unconfirmed reports indicate that there may have been a malfunction with the landing gear or a fire in the aircraft's cargo area. Authorities closed Mariscal Sucre International Airport for more than three hours, causing flight delays and cancellations.
