Transport Union & Medics strike

20 Mar 2009
Transport unions staged a 12-hour strike in the eastern Dominican Republic beginning at 0600 local time on 19 March 2009 to demand that the government repair highways and improve the country's sanitation infrastructure. The strike caused transport disruptions in La Romana, Puerto Plata, Bavaro, Higuey, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and San Pedro de Macoris. Clashes between protesters and police officers occurred in Higuey, where at least 30 people were arrested. The workers allowed private transportation providers to take passengers to and from airports and hotels. The unions will decide on 24 March whether to stage a two-day strike. Meanwhile, doctors and nurses staged a 24-hour nationwide strike in public hospitals on 19 March to demand higher wages and better benefits. Workers staged protesters near medical facilities throughout the country. Doctors continued to provide emergency services and attend to patients who are in a critical state.
