New Metro may face disruptions from bus drivers

The Santo Domingo Metro rapid transit system will partially begin service on 29 January 2009. Fentrauni, a union that represents hundreds of bus drivers, has threatened to cause disruptions at Metro stations. The new transit system will result in layoffs of bus drivers. The union has demanded a meeting with the government to discuss the issue. Protests are expected at the Centro de los Heroes (La Feiria) station, where President Leonel Fernandez will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
