Excellent medical facilities are widely available in Denmark. In Greenland and the Faeroe Islands, medical facilities are limited and evacuation is required for serious illness and injury. Although emergency medical treatment is free of charge, the patient is charged for follow-up care.
Recent medical and dental exams should ensure that the traveler is in good health. Carry appropriate health and accident insurance documents and copies of any important medical records. Bring an adequate supply of all prescription and other medications as well as any necessary personal hygiene items, including a spare pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary.
Colds, influenza and throat infections may be aggravated in winter by the dampness and lack of sunshine. Travelers with arthritis, rheumatism and sinus troubles may find winter uncomfortable. Low humidity indoors in winter is unpleasant for many.
All routine vaccines (such as DTP or Td, Hib, MMR, polio, varicella, influenza and pneumococcal) should be kept up-to-date as a matter of good health practice unrelated to travel.
Sanitary conditions in Denmark are above average. Danish law is strict about commercial processing, cooking, handling and serving of food. All dairies supply pasteurized milk from tubercular-tested cows. Denmark has had no serious epidemics in years. The incidence of communicable diseases in most areas is such that they are unlikely to prove a hazard to the international traveler greater than that found in his own country. There are, of course, health risks, but in most areas the precautions required are minimal. High levels of immunization coverage have reduced the incidence of diseases such as measles and diphtheria. Influenza risk extends from November to April. Diphyllobothriasis (fish tapeworm) may be a problem in the Baltic Sea area.
