Troops to be sent to the DRC-Sudan-Central African Republic (CAR) border areas to attempt to stop rebel activity in the region

09 Sep 2008
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the United Nations announced on 9 September 2008 that Kinshasa will send troops to the DRC-Sudan-Central African Republic (CAR) border areas to attempt to stop rebel activity in the region. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group currently based in northern DRC and led by Joseph Kony, operates in the region and has refused to sign a peace agreement; reports have also suggested that the LRA is currently rearming. Recently, the LRA has been accused of looting villages and abducting CAR, Sudanese and DRC nationals, building new bases in the DRC and running illegal mines in the CAR. The DRC will initially deploy 200 troops to the region, soon to be followed by an additional 900, to help neutralize the rebel group's activities. Kony formed the LRA in 1987 and fought a 20-year civil war in Uganda, which displaced at least 2 million people.
