Stones thrown at UN peacekeeping mission convoy
24 Nov 2008
Angry civilians in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) threw stones at a U.N. peacekeeping mission convoy that was transporting militants on 23 November 2008. The DRC armed forces (FADRC) stopped the MONUC convoy near the northern town of Rwindi, demanding that the 10 members of Mai Mai -- a nominally pro-government militia -- whom it was transporting to Goma for disarmament and reintegration, be handed over to them. MONUC personnel initially refused to do so, resulting in a tense standoff with the FADRC as a crowd of angry civilians gathered. MONUC eventually handed over the militants in order to prevent a further deterioration of the situation. Although the soldiers beat some of the militiamen, no other injuries were reported in the incident.
