Rwandan troops cross border and provide aid to Tutsi rebels
13 Oct 2008
According to reports on 12 October 2008, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) accusations that Rwandan troops have crossed the border and are providing aid to Tutsi rebel groups in the DRC's eastern provinces have raised concerns that the two countries may go to war in the future. Although Rwanda has denied all claims that its troops are preparing for war, the Rwandan government has issued statements that have at least suggested its tacit support for Tutsi rebel leader Laurent Nkunda's actions in the North and South Kivu provinces. Most recently, Kigali newspapers detailed a rebel attack on the Rumangabo army base, which Nkunda's forces captured last week, and congratulated the rebels on the action. Rwanda invaded the DRC twice in the 1990s, and frequently criticizes the DRC government for backing Hutu rebels
