Mudslides continue to be reported in the San Jose-Alajuela area following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake on 8 January 2009. There have been reports of at least 2,000 aftershocks in San Jose in recent days. At least 34 people died as a result of the earthquake, while dozens of others remain missing.
