Large-scale demonstrations will take place throughout Colombia on 20 July 2008 to mark the country's Independence Day and to demand the release of the approximately 700 hostages still held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Travelers should anticipate extensive transportation disruptions in major cities. In Bogota, a rally will take place at 1200 local time at Bolivar Square. In Medellin, protesters will march to Explora Park from several locations, including Botero Square, the Publica Piloto library, San Diego pedestrian bridge and Florenica Park. The government will deploy thousands of additional security forces along the main protest routes.
