Colombian airline crashes

16 Aug 2010
On 16 August 2010 a Boeing 737-200 operated by Aires, a Colombian airline, broke apart upon landing at Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport (SKSP/ADZ) on San Andres, a tourist island located off of Colombia's northern coast. The incident occurred at approximately 0150 local time (0650 UTC); however, domestic and international media outlets did not begin reporting the accident until approximately 0700 local time (1200 UTC). The aircraft was en route from Bogota with approximately 130 people on board (reports on the exact number of passengers and crew vary); one woman was killed in the incident and at least five others were injured. The cause of the mishap has not been established with certainty, but local aviation officials stated that lightning may have hit the aircraft as it landed. Authorities suspended operations at the airport as a result of the incident; it is not known when flights will resume. Aires airline operations have not been affected.
