Wujiaba Airport closes due to flooding

Severe flooding on 1 July 2008 forced authorities to shut down Wujiaba Airport (ZPPP/KMG) in Kunming, a tourist city in southwestern Yunnan province, after water submerged the runway and part of the main terminal building. More than 156 flights were canceled as a result of the flooding and the airport's runway and main terminal remain flooded as of 2 July. The flooding also inundated low-lying neighborhoods in Wujiaba and halted ground transportation, stranding vehicles and causing major traffic jams. The water was reportedly 3 ft/1 m deep in some areas.
