Typhoon forces flight cancellations in & out of Hong Kong
22 Aug 2008
Typhoon Nuri bore down on the city of Hong Kong on 22 August 2008, and the severe weather forced many airlines to cancel flights in and out of Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH/HKG). Airport authorities stated that Cathay Pacific Airlines and Dragonair announced significant cancellations throughout the day on 22 August, and flight operations are expected to be disrupted as the storm makes landfall on 23 August. Airline officials have advised passengers on cancelled flights to first check their airline's website to get updated information before leaving for the airport. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, the storm is expected to weaken as it makes landfall and moves in a northwestern direction into mainland China. As of 0900 UTC, Nuri was located approximately 23 mi/37 km southeast of Hong Kong with maximum sustained wind speed of 51 mph/45 kt, with gusts of up to 63 mph/55 kt.
