Two relatives of U.S Olympic team members attacked
11 Aug 2008
On 9 August 2008 a knife-wielding man attacked two relatives of a U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team coach at the Drum Tower tourist site in Beijing. Authorities stated that one of the coach's relatives was killed and the other injured in the attack. The alleged attacker reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the second story of the ancient Drum Tower tourist site. Local police officers stated that a lone assailant identified as Tang Yongming, a 47-year-old Chinese man from the city of Hangzhou, carried out the attack. A tour guide who was with the family members when the attack occurred was also injured in the incident. Security officers blocked off streets near the Drum Tower immediately after the stabbings while authorities began their investigation. There have been no reports that the knife attack has affected security in other parts of Beijing or Olympic events being held in the city.
