Two explosions on public buses in Kunming - Yunnan Province
21 Jul 2008
Two separate explosions, each occurring within 55 minutes of one another, struck public buses in downtown Kunming, capital of the southwestern Yunnan province, on 21 July 2008. Kunming is located approximately 1,300 mi/2,100 km southwest of Beijing. The first explosion occurred on a No. 54 bus near the Panjiawan bus stop at 0710 local time (2310 UTC) on Renmin Road West; the second blast occurred close to the intersection of Changyuan Road and Renmin Road at 0805 local time (0005 UTC). The blasts killed two people and injured 14 others.
Initial reports suggested that a third explosion occurred on a K2 bus at Minshan terminal; however, there have been no official reports to corroborate this claim. An investigation into the cause of the explosions is being conducted; however, preliminary findings indicate that the explosions were deliberate and man-made. Meanwhile, the area surrounding the bus stop has been cordoned off and the debris from the wreckage has been cleared. Identification checks in and around the crime scene have also been implemented.
