Thunderstorms & flooding affect flights at shanghai airports
25 Aug 2008
Severe thunderstorms, which began at approximately 0600 local time on 25 August 2008, have flooded streets and delayed flights at both airports in Shanghai. The downpour has reportedly exceeded the city's drainage capacity, flooding more than 60 streets, especially in the Xuhui District. Hundreds of homes were reportedly damaged in the flooding. More than 20 flight delays were also reported at Hongqiao Airport (ZSSS/SHA) and Pudong International Airport (ZSPD/PVG). Meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies indicate that the system is slowly moving eastward and that scattered showers are expected for the next 24 hours in the city center, with the stronger storms affecting cities east of Shanghai. Local officials did not indicate when the situation in the city would return to normal, but stated that the system was likely an after effect of Typhoon Nuri.
