Shanghai to follow Beijing with traffic restrictions

In a follow-up to the announcement by Beijing officials that traffic restrictions will be re-introduced in order to decrease pollution, Shanghai officials stated on 16 October 2008, that they too will adopt restrictions; however, on a lesser level. The new restrictions, which will begin in November 2008, will ban government or state-owned vehicles from the road one day out of five. The new restrictions will be based on vehicle registration numbers; unlike Beijing, the new regulations will not be applied to private cars.
