POWER FAILURE CAUSES DISRUPTIONS ON SHANGHAI SUBWAY

Significant disruptions occurred on the Shanghai subway’s Line 1 on 22 December 2009. At approximately 0550 local time the line’s power system failed, and a little more than an hour later -- during repair work on the short circuit -- two trains on the line collided, forcing the closure of the entire line, which services the People's Square in the city center. No serious injuries were reported in the crash, but the closure of the line stranded thousands of passengers during morning rush hour. Additional buses were deployed to transport people into the city. Normal operations on the line resumed at approximately 1215 local time.
