Over 200 taxi drivers protest

On 10 November 2008 more than 200 taxi drivers in the southern city of Sanya on Hainan Island protested against current contract terms and compensation to unlicensed cab drivers. Reports indicate that the general public also joined in the protest, with more than 10 individuals being detained by police officers. Officials have stated that they are looking into the protest issues raised by the taxi drivers. The protest was the second by taxi drivers in a week. On 3 November thousands of drivers went on a violent strike in Chongqing.
