Internet to be censored during Olympics

30 Jul 2008
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) admitted on 30 July 2008 that it has made a deal with the Chinese government, allowing it to censor the Internet during the Olympics, despite previous assurances that access would be unrestricted. This announcement also stated that some "sensitive" sites will be blocked, based on the fact that they are not related to the Olympic Games. Web sites that have reportedly been blocked include the Amnesty International page and a site related to the spiritual group Falun Gong. Reporters in the Main Press Center in Beijing stated that not being able to access sites will severely impede their ability to provide quality journalism.
