Demonstrators detained for protesting against their forced relocation due to the Olympic Games

04 Aug 2008
According to emerging reports on 4 August 2008, demonstrators were detained in Beijing's Qianmen district, which is located south of the historic Tiananmen Square, for protesting their forced relocation. Dozens of protesters, who had gathered in a residential street after being forced from their homes, stated that they were not against the Olympic Games but did not feel it was fair that the Chinese government was demolishing their homes and not properly compensating them. Large groups of people gathered to watch the protest, while uniformed police officers stood by. A group of women, reportedly part of a neighborhood committee, led the protesters away from the protest site; however, it is unclear what has become of the demonstrators since their detainment. The local police station had no comment.
