Chemical pipeline exploded in the city of Nanjing

On 28 July 2010 a chemical pipeline exploded in the city of Nanjing, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 300 others. The blast occurred at an abandoned plastics factory in the city's northern Qixia district at approximately 1000 local time (0200 UTC). The explosion damaged buildings and vehicles within a radius of approximately 300 ft/100 m. Firefighters worked for several hours to control the resulting fire, leading to severe transportation disruptions in the surrounding area. Investigators believe that the incident was the result of an ethylene gas leak.
