A further earthquake aftershock hits Sichuan province
05 Aug 2008
An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan province in central China at 1749 local time (0949 UTC) on 5 August 2008. The quake occurred at a depth of 6 mi/10 km and was centered approximately 30 mi/50 km from Guangyuan; its effects were felt in Chengdu, the provincial capital. Hours before the earthquake struck the area, the final leg of the Olympic torch relay was staged in Chengdu.
Although there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, there is a higher potential for damage in comparison to some other recent aftershocks in the area due to the relatively shallow depth of the quake itself.
