29 Jun 2009
Two passenger trains collided at a transit station in the city of Chenzhou in southern Hunan province on 29 June 2009. Transportation authorities stated that at least three people were killed and 60 others were injured when the two trains crashed into each other at 0234 local time on 28 June as they approached the Chenzhou station. Both trains were bound for the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong province. One had earlier departed from the city of Changsha, while reports did not specify where the other train had originated. Eyewitnesses stated that many homes near the station were damaged as the massive derailment caused the passenger train cars to scatter across the tracks. Rescue workers responded to the scene and were rescuing survivors from the wreckage. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the collision.
