Santiago Airport Reopens Whilst Concepcion Airport Remains Closed
04 Mar 2010
Santiago International Airport (SCEL/SCL) reopened to regularly scheduled international flights on 4 March 2010. Airport managers stated that although the facility has begun to operate some domestic and international flights, damage at the facility caused by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake on 27 February continues to cause some disruptions. As of 4 March, the airport is reportedly handling 60 percent of the usual number of domestic flights. Airport officials estimate that the facility will reach full operational capability in one week, but stated that repair work on the damaged terminal will take approximately one month to complete. International passengers have reportedly waited in line for hours outside a makeshift terminal at the airport to get word of when they will be able to get a seat on international flights out of Santiago. At least two international flights are scheduled to depart during daylight hours -- one to Libya and the other to Canada. More than 500 domestic flights have arrived and departed from the airport since 1 March. Concepcion’s Carriel Sur International Airport (SCIE/CCP), which sustained significant damage in the earthquake, remains closed to all flights.
