Further Aftershocks Hit Country

An aftershock with a magnitude of 6.7 occurred off the coast of central Chile early on 16 March 2010, with its epicenter located approximately 50 mi/80 km north of Concepcion, at a depth of 11.2 mi/18 km. Although there were no reports of additional damage caused by the aftershock in the areas devastated by the 8.8 magnitude quake of 27 February, the tremor shook buildings in Concepcion and Pengo, prompting residents to break curfew as they rushed into the streets. The tremor also caused power and communication outages in Concepcion. No tsunami alert was issued.
