Conservative Sebastian Pinera became the first democratically elected right-wing president of Chile in 52 years after winning a run-off election held on 17 January 2010. Opponent and ruling party candidate Eduardo Frei conceded defeat after preliminary results indicated that Pinera had won 51.8 percent of the vote to Frei's 48.1 percent.
