Presidential guard executes a criminal in an attempt to end a riot in the capital, Bangui

26 Nov 2008
A Central African Republic (CAR) presidential guard executed a criminal in a local hospital in an attempt to end a riot in the capital, Bangui, on 25 November 2008. Hundreds of angry protesters blocked several main streets in Bangui and protested in front of the city's hospital after a Malian citizen killed his wife earlier in the day. The protesters -- who were armed with stones, clubs and iron bars -- caught and beat the man soon after the incident. Local police officers rescued the injured man and took him to a hospital. After local security guards attempted to disperse the crowd with tear gas and by firing their weapons into the air, President Francois Bozize's presidential guard was called. When the protesters still refused to disperse after several hours, a guard executed the Malian man. Reports indicate that the crowd dispersed after the execution. There were no other injuries or casualties reported in the incident. The presidential guard and other CAR security forces are frequently accused of human rights abuses, including the killing and torturing of civilians.
