Police shooting starts riot
11 Aug 2008
Rioting broke out in the Montreal neighbourhood of Montreal North overnight on 10-11 August 2008 after police officers shot an 18-year-old near Henri Bourassa Park on 9 August. Protesters set fire to cars, vandalized buildings and set up barricades with garbage. Rioters looted several stores. Anti-riot police officers set up a perimeter around the area affected by the violence; two police officers and an ambulance technician have been injured. There have long been simmering tensions between police officers and local residents in Montreal North, which has an immigrant community. Authorities have launched an official investigation into the shooting incident that prompted the riots.
