Helicopter crashes in sea

A Sikorsky S-92 helicopter crashed into the Atlantic Ocean approximately 54 mi/87 km southeast of Saint John’s, Newfoundland, at 0918 local time (1148 UTC) on 12 March 2009. The helicopter, which was operated by Cougar Helicopters, was en route to a Hibernia offshore oil platform when the pilot reported technical problems. There were 18 people on board the aircraft. Emergency crews rescued one passenger; at least one passenger is confirmed dead and 16 others remain missing. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
