Cameroonian security forces repel rebel attack

20 Oct 2008
According to reports on 20 October 2008, Cameroonian security forces were able to repel a rebel attack off the waters of the Bakassi Peninsula on 18 October. The Niger Delta Defense and Security Council (NDDSC) claimed responsibility for the attack. The NDDSC is a little-known armed group that is fighting for compensation to resettle former Bakassi inhabitants who were forced to leave the peninsula when Nigeria handed over the territory's administration to Cameroon in August 2008. The Cameroonian military stated that it sunk one of the rebel speedboats in the attack, but the NDDSC denied this claim; no Cameroonian soldiers were injured. Following the attack, the NDDSC reiterated its goal to "make Bakassi ungovernable" and turn it into "another Darfur" if Cameroon does not pay the necessary compensation for resettlement. At least 50 people have been killed in violence on or near the peninsula so far in 2008.
