Increasing land disputes will impact on travelling foreigners

On 24 January 2009 Cambodian police officers cordoned off roads near the Russian Embassy in Phnom Penh in order to begin clearing a nearby slum for future construction. Slum residents demonstrated against the destruction of their homes. In response, police officers fired tear gas in order to forcefully evict the families; at least eight people were seriously injured when bulldozers and cranes came to raze the area.
