Grenade attacks in Bujumbura
14 Jun 2010
): Late on 12 June 2010 near-simultaneous grenade attacks injured at least seven people in Bujumbura. The attackers were on motorcycles and targeted an unidentified hotel, a church, a bus station and the home of a local ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party official. Authorities believe that the attacks were coordinated and may have been perpetrated by the political opposition ahead of the 28 June presidential election. Several CNDD-FDD offices throughout the country were also reportedly vandalized. Six opposition candidates were originally expected to contest the poll against incumbent CNDD-FDD candidate President Pierre Nkurunziza, but they have since withdrawn their candidacy to protest the results of the 24 May local elections, in which the CNDD-FDD won approximately 64 percent of the vote.
